Beginners Photoshop & Print Design course summary
This beginners and intermediate Photoshop course will cover the most common Photoshop features and the techniques used in preparing images and designing for print and for use in page layouts and page designs in desktop publishing applications.
Photoshop course content is flexible and may be altered to better suit your needs. It will normally be partly based around working through some of your own projects and designs.
Photoshop course duration: 2 day course.
Level: beginners / intermediate.
Software: Photoshop CS5, Photoshop CS4, Photoshop CS3, Photoshop CS2.
Numbers: One to one or small groups of up
to 4 trainees.
Trainees in a group should have the same skill level and the same requirements.
Locations:
At client's office or home in Birmingham and Midlands areas and around the UK.

You should already have knowledge
of Photoshop tools and general Photoshop usage.

Day 1
Photoshop basics - interface and tools
Using the tools and changing tool option settings
Using floating palettes: Layers, History, Info, etc
Cropping, Rotating & Colour Modes
Cropping images to remove unwanted areas
Rotating or Flipping an image
Converting between different colour modes (RGB to CMYK or Grayscale)
Selection Tools
Using the different selection tools
Making a selection around an object
Moving or copying the selected area to a different position on the image
Selecting an area of an image based on its' colour, and modifying that area
Removing or changing the background of a selected object
Layers
Working with layers: organising, naming and deleting layers
Combining photographs and text in separate Layers
Modifying the content of a layer, moving layer content, editing or erasing areas
Changing opacity and blending options on layers to get different effects
Add a drop shadow and emboss effects to an item on a layer
Text
Creating normal text and artistic text, setting text attributes, choosing colours
Applying drop shadow and emboss effects to text
Colour Correction
Using Levels to adjust brightness/contrast of an image
Adjusting image colours
Creating a tinted image
Filters
Filters for image enhancement - sharpening and blurring
Creating simple textures and patterns using noise, motion blur and other filters
Colours & Painting
Painting and brush tools: defining a brush size and painting
Choosing a colours
Filling areas with solid colour or gradient
Image Resizing & Resolution
Resizing an image using the image size command, keeping images sharp when
resizing
Discussion of typical sizes and resolutions for different jobs e.g. brochure or, web page
Resizing images to the correct size for the job while maintaining image
quality
Day 2
Colours and colour correction
Using Levels, Colour Balance and Selective Colour to colour correct an image
Changing only selected areas of an image
Setting pure black and pure white
Creating a faded image to go behind text
Making certain that the files you create and the colours used are printable
Creating a good quality greyscale image from a colour photograph
Working
with CMYK files
Creating Duotones or Tritones
Simple retouching techniques
Removing spots, scratches and lines, text, etc.
Changing photo background colours
(more retouching can be included if required *)
Paths and Clipping Paths
Using the pen tools for creating and modifying paths
Editing and saving a path with an image
Saving as a clipping paths to use with with DTP applications (to mask off
areas of an image)
Actions and Batch processing
Recording a series of steps to be performed on a number of images
e.g. changing resolution and resizing a number images to the same size
Naming, editing, saving, loading and applying actions
Batch processing a complete folder of files
Text & Design
Filling text with a texture or photograph
Creating drop shadows & emboss effects on text or artwork
Fading out an image to solid colour
Creating vignettes and borders around
images
Bringing Illustrator artwork and EPS logos into Photoshop
Creating textures and patterns for backgrounds
Simple montage and compositing
Creating designs with images, text and artwork
Using
Blend Modes and opacity settings
Using Layer Masks
