You should have good computer skills.
Some previous knowledge of design software would be helpful, but not essential.

1) Creating a new Illustrator document

Starting a new document
Viewing the document and working in artwork or preview modes
Grids, guides, and other features to help you accurately position objects
Adding and using guidelines - locking and unlocking, positioning accurately

2) Illustrator workspace

Floating palettes
Opening, shrinking and expanding to see extra options
Hiding palettes

Zooming in and out
Zoom tool, keyboard shortcuts, menu

Moving around the document

3) Selection tools & basic shapes

Selection Tools - Selection - Direct Selection - Group Selection

Shape tools
Creating shapes (rectangle, ellipse, star or polygon)
Specify shape dimensions

Set a fill colour for an object
Set stroke colour and stroke weight

Drawing with the pencil and paintbrush tools

4) Modifying shapes and selected objects

Shape Modifying (transform, rotate, scale, shear)
